Anka Security recommends installing carbon monoxide detectors on every floor of your home, in every bedroom, and near your sleeping areas. Install them approximately 1.5 meters (5 feet) above the ground or on the ceiling, and avoid installing them too close to gas appliances, in bathrooms, or in high-humidity areas. Below are specific installation guidelines shared by Anka:
Detector Installation Locations:
Per Floor: Install at least one detector on each floor, including the basement.
Near Sleeping Areas: Install one detector outside each bedroom. If your home uses a forced-draft gas or propane stove, also install one inside the bedroom.
In or Near the Garage: Install one detector near the garage attached to the house, as vehicle exhaust is a source of carbon monoxide.
Indoor Installation Recommendations
Installation LocationsHeight: Install them on a wall or ceiling approximately 1.5 meters (5 feet) above the ground. Carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air and rises with warm air.
Avoid “Blind Spots” and Obstacles: Do not install detectors at the corners where walls and ceilings meet, or in places that may be obstructed by furniture or curtains.
Keep away from electrical appliances: To avoid false alarms, the detector should be kept at least 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.5 meters) away from gas appliances such as stoves, cooktops, and fireplaces.
Avoid installing the detector in the following locations: too close to gas appliances; near bathrooms, toilets, or showers; near windows, doors, or vents where there is a large flow of air; in direct sunlight; or in areas where the temperature is below 40°F (4°C) or above 100°F (38°C).
